The
Pirate Voyage
An
Overview
The
Pirate Voyage, also known as the senior project, was adopted as a graduation
requirement by the Adna School District Board of Directors in 1996. The
goal of the project is to teach skills that will help the students be successful
in the future, no matter what they choose to do. Time-management, problem-solving,
and self-discipline are just a few of the things they practice and learn
during the Voyage.
During the second semester seniors complete a research paper, project,
portfolio and oral presentation on a topic of their choice. This work is
done in English 12 and makes up the majority of the second semester grade
in this class.
On
the first day of the second semester, each senior receives a packet containing
information about the entire Voyage. We proceed through the project, step-by-step,
from February through June. We make it extremely clear to the students
what they need to do, and when. There is a lot of support for them, but
they must be disciplined and use their time wisely in order to avoid last-minute
stress.

Word to Parents
Students who have completed the project agree that it's not that bad, as
long as they use classtime well, plan ahead, follow directions, and ask
questions. Those who procrastinate, waste time and try to cut corners find
that second semester can be pretty stressful.
You can help by reminding your child that hundreds of students have successfully
completed the Voyage, and he or she can too! A consistent, conscientious
effort really pays off; they can ALL be successful, and graduate with a
real sense of pride and accomplishment.
